"We show Russian film distributors where the wild things are”
Russian people couldn’t see some movies in cinemas in 2009. Movies like ‘Whatever works’ by Woody Allen, ‘The Road’ starring Viggo Mortensen (Aragorn in The Lord of The Rings), and the unusual story ‘Where the Wild Things Are’ were not shown because of one thing – these movies couldn’t be profitable. This opinion was stated by Russian film distributors.
Many Russian film fans with outstanding ideas are not happy about this happening in the movie business. They want to see new interesting films shot by great directors with great actors in cinemas. Some of them have their own blogs (for example, livejournal’s blogs) where they write their positions about the actual problem which is rather close for them. Thus, one blogger Sergei_K made a request for his readers: "We show to KARO (Russian film distributor), where the wild things are. I hope you, my readers, follow me and sign my letter to KARO. We must win this case and great films will be shown in Russian theatres”.
But protests like this can’t do everything. If the film distributors don’t want to show some movies, distributors won’t show them. Yes, many people, especially young men with rebel’s souls prefer to speak about problems like this in one way – film distributors encroach on their legitimate rights. But it is only one way. Film distributors give their simple explanation about the problem – they can’t make money with some movies. But it is not the best explanation for quality film fans.
Fans have made their decision – they would fight for their rights. What will happen? Nothing will happen, because film distributors are only film distributors and not politicians. Their decision about films is not ideological, it is only business decisions.
We can say that some unusual films were shown in Russian theatres with a great success. For example, ‘Antichrist’ by Lars von Trier, ‘The Imaginarium’ of Doctor Parnassus by Terry Gilliam, and ‘Paranormal Activity’ with an extremely small budget of about 15 thousand dollars.
In 2010 some movies will not be shown. For example maybe the new film of French director Gaspar Noe – ‘Enter the Void’ or the remake of classic horror movie ‘Evil Dead’ and many others. Yes, now we have the 3D-movie-age, but it’s only a happening and probably 3D, 4D and other great fashions will die soon. And today if we want to see some interesting films which are not shown in cinemas we can go to some interesting websites and download these movies without problems. Films distributors make their business and pirates make their business too. Today we must say to them "thank you”.
